In real life, they are a common sight in anime & manga. Their character roles are often minor and decorative. They exist almost exclusively to be an actual mascot for whatever series they represent, and may or may not have a speaking role. In EXTRA, they serve those same roles in their respective “shows”, but a lot of them have banded together to rescue Extras under the DERP organization!
