Goodness, that feels simultaneously insulting, endearing and… understandable, in a deep way. It’s like…. a (opposite? not quite… selfish? No… clinical?) more personal version of people who say they hope to go last, so others don’t suffer the loss, who go to extreme lengths to reduce the hardships of others, taking on excess suffering, or push others away so they don’t hurt them. It’s hard to describe, but it sure as heck evokes some powerful visceral feelings.
